Life on lens: Quarry Hill Flats in the 1950s

The smiles on faces capture a moment in time among residents at Quarry Hill Flats in the 1950s. These wonderful photos capture a sense of community and togetherness among residents and staff at the UK’s largest social housing complex. It was social housing on a grand scale - 938 flats covering a site that reached 36 acres. The flats ranged from one bedroom though to five bedroomed apartments. And for many, the day they moved into the flats was their first experience of an indoor bathroom, a flat per family, clean, tidy and spacious. They were part of the cityscape for more than 40 years until they were demolished in 1978. The photos, the majority of which are published courtesy of Jennifer Haigh, area packed with faces from the past as well as some images providing a unique bird’s eye view of the site.
