A busy and bustling City Square takes centre stage in this gallery of memories charting a year in the life of your city centre in the mid-1940s. They turn back the clock to 1946 and bring into focus a range of landmarks and news stories from the year. It was a 12 months which featured a referendum voting to open cinemas on a Sunday. Familiar landmarks and street scenes in focus include City Square, Gaumont Cinema, The Headrow and New Briggate and Pack Horse Yard. The images are published courtesy of photographic archive Leodis, which is run by Leeds Library & Information Service. They also run heritage blog The Secret Library Leeds, which provides a behind the scenes look at the Central Library and highlights from its special collections, including rare books hidden away in the stacks. A converted air raid shelter in a back yard. Barbed wire is above the wooden fence behind and a lamp post is in the background. This is likely to be just off St James Street in the grounds of a building used for this purpose. The white building is the Civic Hall on Calverley Street. The building to the left was The Coliseum.
