This unassuming, dilapidated building on Woodhouse Street was once home to a pioneering cabaret club and casino. The Ace of Clubs was known as one of the first, if not the first, "London-style" club in Leeds, featuring casino tables and "bunny girls." The former Astra Cinema went on to featured cabaret acts including Frank Carson, Little & Large, Dickie Valentine, and Bernard Manning. And by the 1977 was transformed into a key punk venue hosting Siouxsie & the Banshees, X-Ray Spex, The Mekons, and Gang of Four. This photo dates back to 1996 and is one of 17 charting the year around Leeds. It features city centre landmarks as well as memories from around the suburbs with Middleton, Richmond Hill and Headingley all in focus.
