It proved to be a year of people power and protest. 1986 will be remembered by many as a 12 months which saw campaigners make a stand over issues that affected their lives and livelihoods. Traders delivered a petition signed by 250,000 people opposing council plans to redevelop Kirkgate Market. Traders dressed as pallbearers delivering the petition in a coffin to Leeds City Council planning officials. Education chiefs announced plans to close dozens of schools, prompting mass protests from staff, parents and pupils affected by the proposals. These photos chart the year with city centre landmarks in focus as well as memories from around the suburbs with Middleton, Pool, Stourton, Bramley, Holbeck, Bramhope, Pudsey, Burley and Horsforth all featured. The images are a mix from the YEP archive and others published courtesy of photographic archive Leodis, which is run by Leeds Library & Information Service. They also run heritage blog The Secret Library Leeds, which provides a behind the scenes look at the Central Library and highlights from its special collections, including rare books hidden away in the stacks.
