28 of the best photos take you back to Leeds in 1989

You can almost smell the mouth-watering taste of the food served up by these waitresses if you close your eyes.

This photo takes you inside the fish and chip restaurant that was Harry Ramsden’s in Guiseley at the end of the 1980s. It was a time of a large haddock special served with chips, mushy peas and bread and butter. Oh, and all washed down with a proper brew of tea in a pot. This was Leeds in 1989 and the photo is one of 28 charting the year. It was a 12 months which saw work continue on construction of the new Schofields Shopping Centre and plans underway for the new Victoria Quarter. This included a £6 million roof over Queen Victoria Street designed by Brian Clarke in stained glass. The gallery features city centre landmarks as well as memories from around the suburbs with Tingley, Chapeltown, Micklefield and Pudsey all in focus. The images are a mix from the YEP archive and others published courtesy of photographic archive Leodis, which is run by Leeds Library & Information Service.
