A mechanical digger - being transported on a lorry - was the cause of the mayhem after it became well and truly stuck for 90 minutes in a tunnel on the eastbound carriageway of the Leeds Inner Ring Road. The one and a half hour hold-up caused traffic to tail back as far as Armley roundabout blocking many major roads in and out of the city centre. At one point traffic on the westbound carriageway on the Inner Ring Road - travelling in the opposite direction to the jammed load - tailed back as far as Claypit Lane. This was Leeds in 1983 and the photo is one of 36 charting the year in the life of your Leeds. City centre landmarks are in focus as well as memories from around the suburbs with Pudsey, Harehills, Scholes, Cross Green, Chapeltown, Garforth and Bramley all in focus. The photos are a mix from the YEP archive and others published courtesy of photographic archive Leodis, which is run by Leeds Library & Information Service. The camera looks across an area densely populated with red brick streets. On the right, the large brick building with decorative gables is the former Kepler Council School which was later known as Roseville County Secondary School. Another school is visible towards the top left. It has two towers with pointed roofs and dutch-style gables. This is the former Gipton Board School, built in 1897, and fronting Harehills Road between Conway Street and Conway Mount.
