Raising a child to the age of 18 now costs the average couple £250,000, according to a report by the Child Poverty Action Group.
Bringing up children has never been cheap, but it was considerably less dear during the 70s.
These priceless photos transport you back to the decade of disco, flares and fondue dinner parties.
They capture many of the sights around Yorkshire that you may remember if you grew up back then, from lost shops like Woolworths and C&A to old cinemas and swimming pools.
Youngsters are pictured in the classroom, sitting at traditional wooden desks, many of which still had inkwells.
They are seen splashing around at a popular park paddling pool, queuing with their parents for the Christmas sales at a famous department store, and playing hopscotch on the street outside an apartment block.
This retro photo gallery will bring back memories, too, of trips to the market, days out by train and major events, from motorbike displays to crowning the May Queen.
Do these photos bring back any happy memories for you of life in the 1970s? What do you miss most about those days?
