Altruistic photos take you back to Armley in the 1950s

This Armley street photographed in the 1950s boasts a connection to a legendary local entrepreneur.

Ledgard’s Place was probably named after Samuel Ledgard who took over the Nelson Hotel on Armley Road from his father in the late 1890s. He later began and ran a thriving catering service, a cattle farming business, a steam wagon haulage firm, a tour firm and bus routes. The photo is of more than 20 charting a decade of memories around Armley. It also features local landmarks and shops as well as well travelled roads and streets which now have no name. The images are a mix from West Yorkshire Archive Service and others published courtesy of photographic archive Leodis, which is run by Leeds Library & Information Service. They also run heritage blog The Secret Library Leeds, which provides a behind the scenes look at the Central Library and highlights from its special collections, including rare books hidden away in the stacks.
