Enchanting photos take you back to Leeds in 1929

The ornate facade of a Leeds city centre pub takes centre stage in this wonderous look back at a year in the life of Leeds at the end of the 1920s.

The Marquis of Granby served up a drink and a warm welcome to generations of revellers. The boozer which was rebuilt in 1897 had its own brewhouse until1931. It was replaced with a new building on Eastgate which opened in February 1933 after road widening before last orders were called in 1984 when it was converted to offices. The photo from 1929 is one of 12 showcasing life around the city centre and beyond. The gallery features well travelled streets which would be replaced by the Lewis’s department store by the early 1930s. The images are published courtesy of photographic archive Leodis, which is run by Leeds Library & Information Service. They also run heritage blog The Secret Library Leeds, which provides a behind the scenes look at the Central Library and highlights from its special collections, including rare books hidden away in the stacks.
