Fascinating photos take you back to Leeds city centre in 1943

Leeds city centre in 1943: Call Lane, Boar Lane, Infirmary Street, Park Row, Kirkgate, The Headrow in focus

It was the year your city welcomed home prisoners of war who had experienced the horrors of conflict. Leeds Town Hall hosted a lunch party for more than 100 prisoners who had been repatriated. They were joined by their families at the event which was sponsored by the Yorkshire Evening News who organised a POW club. This was 1943 and main photo is one of 12 charting life around Leeds city centre during the year. Memories from the city’s Youth Week are also featured as well as a range of familiar landmarks and thoroughfares including Call Lane, Boar Lane, Infirmary Street, Park Row, Kirkgate and The Headrow. The photos are a mix from the YEP archive and others published courtesy of photographic archive Leodis, which is run by Leeds Library & Information Service. They also run heritage blog The Secret Library Leeds, which provides a behind the scenes look at the Central Library and highlights from its special collections, including rare books hidden away in the stacks.
