Headingley in the 1980s: When residents said no to plans for more pubs

It was the decade Headingley residents told city planners their suburb had enough pubs. More than 120 people protested about a scheme to convert a building at the junction of North Lane, Ash Road and Cross Chapel Street into another one. The city’s West and North West divisional plans committee had deferred an application for a change of use of the Co-op building so councillors could visit the site. The objectors said they were concerned about the possible noise and disturbance if the pub plan went ahead, and they claimed, Headingley already had enough of them. This was Headingley in the 1980s and the issue is one of 11 photo memories which make up this gallery from the decade. The photos have never been seen before having being digitised after being discovered in the Yorkshire Evening Post archive. READ MORE: Memories of the Arndale Centre LOVE LEEDS? LOVE NOSTALGIA?
