This collection of photos turns the spotlight on life around Holbeck in the 1950s. An array of different aspects of life around the community during the decade fall into focus ranging from memories of sweet shops and a Royal visit through to inside a flax spinning mill. Other stand-out images featured include local landmark Holbeck Lodge , which was once home to engineer Matthew Murray. He was responsible for the world's first practical steam locomotive engines, machine tools and spinning machinery. His house was nicknamed 'Steam Hall' as Murray had installed steam central heating. The images are a mix from West Yorkshire Archive Service and others published courtesy of photographic archive Leodis, which is run by Leeds Library & Information Service.
