They were the largest and most modern flats in Europe when constructed in the 1930s. Quarry Hill Flats provided a home sweet home for generations of residents. It featured revolutionary amenities like a nursery, laundrette, and swimming pool. Yet structural defects, dampness, and poor maintenance meant by the 1970s the flats were in poor condition prompting plans for their demolition. Demolition began with Jackson House on September 25, 1975 and the whole complex was levelled by June 1978. These photos showcase the beginning of the end and highlight the demise and decay as the walls came tumbling down forever.
