These photos are sure to evoke memories for a generation of people who called Leeds home or a city for work, rest and play back in the early 1980s. They turn back the clock to 1983 and bring into focus stories which were making the news headlines during a year to remember. City centre landmarks including Eastgate roundabout and Kirkgate are in focus as well as a range of photo memories from the suburbs. These include Tingley, Scholes, Harehills, Chapeltown, Fearnville, Bramley, Headingley, Morley, Beeston and Roundhay. The photos are published courtesy of photographic archive Leodis, which is run by Leeds Library & Information Service. They also run heritage blog The Secret Library Leeds, which provides a behind the scenes look at the Central Library and highlights from its special collections, including rare books hidden away in the stacks.
