These campaigners who spearheaded a drive to ‘get fenced in’ on a Whinmoor estate in the early 1970s still thought the move was a hit by the dawn of the new decade. Beattie Turner and Kathleen Olbison had successfully petitioned Leeds City Council to be allowed to put up fencing in front of their homes in on the open plan estate. When your Yorkshire Evening Post caught up with them in the early 1980s they described the fences as a “Godsend”. “It cost me £17 back in 1973 when I fenced in my garden and it has been worth every penny,” said Mrs Olbison in October 1983. The story and photo of the neighbours is one of nine which make up a mini gallery of memories chartin g life around Whinmoor in the 1980s. Memories of an estate pub and the fight to save a Roman road are also featured in this collection of photos plucked from the YEP archive and digitised for the first time.
