From looms to lattes and from graft to gift boxes, Springfield Mills is proving there’s plenty of life in the old mill - as a creative destination hub for retail, food, fitness and business

Built in the 1850s and now around 170 years old, it has swapped cloth for commerce, transforming from a proud Yorkshire textile site into a buzzing home to more than 60 modern brands, writes Graham Walker.

FREE e-GUIDE Explore Farsley’s Springfield Mills in our free page-turning e-Guide and take a closer look inside the businesses helping this old mill spin a very modern success story.

From the outside, Springfield Mills still carries all the character of a proud workhorse with solid stone, industrial bones and the kind of presence that hints at a busy past.

But step through the doors in Farsley today and you’ll find something very different to the mill of old.

The machinery may be gone, but the hum of activity remains, only now it comes from coffee machines, fitness classes, dance sessions, artisan bakers, fragrance makers and a growing community of independent businesses, all helping write the building’s next chapter.

It now weaves a mix of creativity, commerce and community, where ideas, experiences and local enterprise are made to thrive.

The beauty of Springfield Mills lies in its variety. Visitors can enjoy a gym session, a yoga class, coffee stop, browse for gifts or even find their next office or workshop space.

That blend of uses gives the building its energy and helps it feel more like a small village of ambition than a traditional commercial site.

Fitness plays a big part in that story. Workhouse Fitness brings a strong sense of community to the mill with its welcoming gym, classes and training spaces, while RISE Dance & Fitness adds movement of a different kind, offering a lively studio atmosphere where people can build confidence, keep active and have fun.

There is space to slow down too. Om Yoga Works brings a calmer note to the building with yoga, pilates and mindful movement, offering a wellbeing space that feels right at home among the site’s mix of businesses.

And when it comes to refuelling, The Loft Coffee Shop has become one of the mill’s social anchors, serving up coffee, homemade food and the kind of cosy atmosphere that keeps people coming back.

Springfield Mills also has a strong creative and retail streak running through it. The Marshmallowist adds a touch of luxury with handcrafted confectionery, while Anaïs & bakery brings stylish artisan bakes and beautifully presented sweet treats into the fold.

Nearby, Box of Whiffs ads fragrance, personality and a little playful flair, showing the kind of niche independent retail that can flourish in a setting like this.

And it is not all lifestyle and leisure.

Businesses such as Trust Electrical, providing commercial electrical services across Leeds and West Yorkshire, underline the practical, hard-working side of Springfield Mills too, proving the site has room for skilled trade and commercial expertise alongside customer-facing brands and creative enterprise.

Crucially, Springfield Mills is not standing still. The Bostock Building points to the future. The first new addition to the site in more than 70 years, it offers modern workshop and office space for businesses looking to become part of a site that already has character, footfall and a built-in sense of community.

It was opened by Chrisne Bostock, the widow of former Gaunts MD and Chairman John Bostock after whom the building is named.

In many ways, Springfield Mills is doing exactly what Yorkshire’s best old buildings should do — keeping its soul while finding a whole new purpose.

Once it helped to power industry. Now, it is helping to power modern Yorkshire enterprise.
