Once facing the prospect of major knee replacement surgery, Leeds grandma Rita, aged 68, is now out of pain and she no longer needs the operation that once felt inevitable.

Just two years ago, doctors had warned her that mobility issues and Rheumatoid Arthritis meant a knee op was likely unavoidable.

Living with constant pain, high blood pressure and rising cholesterol, her health was deteriorating and her confidence along with it.

But instead of accepting more medication and a surgical date, Rita joined the Slimming World with weekly meetings at the Baptist Church in Wood Lane, Rothwell.

Week by week, the weight came off, her strength returned, and the pain that had defined her daily life began to ease — until the moment she realised she no longer needed the replacement knee operation at all.

Rita, a retired aerospace finance worker from Rothwell, has been married to her husband Keith for 48 years. Together they have two sons and four grandchildren — her pride and joy — and now she’s looking ahead to an even happier future.

“I feel healthier, fitter, happier, and having gone down five sizes is such a buzz for me when I try new clothes on. I will never go back to my old habits,” she says.

One of the most emotional milestones in Rita’s journey came when she realised just how dramatically her future had changed. As the weight began to fall off, something remarkable happened.

“In 2014, the Rheumatoid Consultant told me I needed a knee replacement. Guess what? I’m no longer in pain and I no longer need the operation!” she says.

Rita’s journey began with a frightening health warning. “I had a medical at my surgery in July ’24 and my BMI was over 44, my blood pressure was high and so was my cholesterol. The nurse was very concerned,” she explains.

“I was already living with Rheumatoid Arthritis, taking a huge number of medications daily, including long-term steroids and was constantly in pain,” ssaid Rita.

Rather than feeling defeated, she made a powerful decision. “I’d seen the Slimming World group advertised and decided to join instead of taking more medication.”

That one brave choice changed everything. Now she hopes her story will inspire others to join Slimming World.

Rita knows how daunting that first step can be. She says when she joined Slimming World in August 2024, the biggest hurdle wasn’t changing what she ate, it was simply finding the courage to walk in.

“Walking through the door the first time and getting on the scales was my greatest challenge,” she says.

From the beginning, Rita was surprised by how realistic and enjoyable the plan felt. “I love Food Optimising because it’s not restrictive. We have so many choices,” she explains.

Rita still enjoys all her favourite meals – from salmon with Slimming World chips and salad, to lasagne and roast dinners. “It doesn’t feel like a diet,” she says, “and that’s exactly why it’s been sustainable.

“Being overweight did affect my health,” Rita added.

“The consultant told me I would struggle to lose weight because of the steroids I was taking for my Rheumatoid Arthritis.” Despite everything stacked against her, Rita never gave up. As the weight steadily came off, her health improved alongside it.

“I can go for long walks uphill, climb stairs quickly without aid, tie my laces, buy modern clothes and sleep without medication,” Rita says proudly.

These everyday moments now feel like major victories after years of pain and limitations. The impact hasn’t just been personal.

“Food Optimising has completely changed my life (and my husband’s). It’s so easy to follow,” Rita adds, showing just how far-reaching her changes have been.

Her Slimming World Consultant, Caroline Sykes, has watched Rita’s transformation unfold week by week and couldn’t be prouder of all she's done.

“I am unbelievably proud of Rita,” says Caroline. “Her weight loss is incredible, but what makes me most proud is how much she has improved her health. She’s gone from being in constant pain and on multiple medications to feeling fitter, stronger and in control of her life again. That is a true transformation.

“Rita never made excuses, she made changes. She trusted the process, showed up for herself every week and believed she deserved better health. Now she’s living proof of what can happen when you don’t give up.”

“Rita didn’t just lose weight. She gained her health back and that’s the greatest transformation of all.”
