Slimming World: Richard is walking tall after losing three stone

Leeds man is enjoying a healthier, more active lifestyle after losing three stone with Slimming World.
Richard Walker knows better than most what it means to start again.
He was left paralysed from the neck down but with Leeds grit and determination he bravely battled his way back, step by step.
After recovering from a rare condition he later joined Slimming World to lose weight and improve his overall health.
The 59-year-old from Garforth is now celebrating - walking tall after losing three stone.

He is far more active these days. He can walk up to 15 miles on the flat and tackle hills without stopping. In one week alone, he clocked up 32 miles.
His story is extraordinary, but in many ways it's a familiar tale.
Across Leeds and Yorkshire, many men pride themselves on simply getting on with things.
Work comes first. Family comes first. Health? That can wait - until it can’t.
For Richard the turning point wasn’t dramatic. It came quietly, after redundancy, when life slowed down enough for him to take stock. “I felt OK in myself,” he says. “But then I had the time to take a proper look.”

Richard didn’t feel unhealthy, not until something forced him to confront it.
For him, that moment was shaped by a much bigger battle. In 2018, he was hospitalised for five months and paralysed from the neck down after developing Guillain-Barré syndrome, a rare condition where the body’s immune system attacks the nerves.
At one point, he nearly lost his life. Recovery was long and gruelling, involving intensive physiotherapy just to regain basic movement.
Although he rebuilt his strength, the after-effects lingered. Reduced lung capacity, weight gain, and limited mobility made everyday life harder. Even walking uphill became a challenge.
It wasn’t rock bottom, just a slow, steady decline that many men recognise. Feeling “not bad,” but knowing deep down you could be better.

Encouraged by Sharon, his wife, Richard joined Slimming World in April 2025, despite his doubts. He never fancied the idea of a diet. And that’s where Slimming World’s approach matters. It isn’t about strict dieting or going hungry.
Its Food Optimising plan focuses on every day, filling foods like lean proteins, vegetables, hearty meals that fit into real life. No fads. No extremes. Just sustainable changes.
For Richard, that meant building meals around low calorie foods like salads and vegetables, while still enjoying satisfying options like salmon, beans, and wholemeal bread. But just as important as the food was the support in breaking old habits and creating new healthier ones.
Richard attends the Crossgates Slimming World group on Friday mornings, where he’s supported by his consultant, Dawn Driver.
Walking into that room for the first time felt daunting.
“A man in a woman’s world,” he said. But the reality quickly proved different. “It wasn’t what I thought at all. It’s supportive, it’s friendly, and there’s a lot of laughter.”
The number on the scales is only part of his story and it goes far beyond appearance.
Dawn has watched his transformation with pride.
“What inspires me most about Richard isn’t the weight loss, it’s the resilience,” she says. “He never once used his past or his limitations as an excuse. He showed up, week after week and I’m incredibly proud of him.”
But she also highlights the impact he has on others.
“Richard’s not just focused on his own journey, he’s always ready to offer advice, share tips, and support anyone who needs a boost,” Dawn added. “He’s such a friendly, encouraging presence in group, and that makes a huge difference to the people around him.”
And that’s the message men across Leeds need to hear, she says.
This isn’t about chasing perfection or punishing yourself. It’s about making realistic changes, finding support, and sticking with it, even when it feels uncomfortable at first.
She adds that too many men are struggling in silence with their weight and health. They won’t talk about it. They won’t ask for support. But they should.
As Dawn puts it: "Getting support isn’t weakness, it’s strength. And you never know how far you can go until you take that first step.”
Richard agrees. He said: “The first step can feel like the hardest and I'm a very self-driven person.
"But once you start, you realise it's a group of likeminded people, who cheer each other on and help keep each other motivated and inspired.”
In a city as strong and resilient as Leeds, it might be the message that matters most.
You don’t have to do it alone.
