‘Typical England’: Leeds reacts to Three Lions’ heart-breaking World Cup exit against Argentina

“England deserve that just sitting back doing nothing for 40 min.” ⚽

England’s quest to win a second World Cup came to a heart-breaking end against Argentina last night.

Despite taking the lead through a goal from Anthony Gordon early in the second half, Lionel Messi and co eventually equalised after a period of heavy pressure before snatching the win with a late header.

It means that the Three Lions will not be adding a second star to the badge. However, they still face the prospect of a third place play-off against France on Saturday (July 18).

Following the gut-punch of Argentina's late winner, the Yorkshire Evening Post readers reacted to the result on social media.

Mike Cole said: “England deserve that just sitting back doing nothing for 40 min.”

Charlotte Fergie added: “It’s typical England style.” Andy Craddock said: “Asked for it unfortunately.”

John Woollin wrote: “What England deserves, nothing. Like watching a Southgate team again; just sit back and invite the opposition to attack.”

Echoing that sentiment, Jay Rickerby said: “What happens when you sit back inviting pressure.”

Chris Tonge added to the chorus, writing: “Tuchel went full on Southgate & hey ho … same result.”

Joining in the criticism of England’s defensive focus in the game, Paul Oxley said: “You can't try and defend a one goal lead against a team like them.”

Offering a bit of a different perspective, Manuel Reyes said: “Most commentators here need to learn how to support the England team. Those boys gave everything.”
