Leeds United hitman Chris Wood doubtful for Brentford visit

CHRIS Wood is doubtful for Leeds United's Championship hosting of Brentford on Saturday but head coach Garry Monk says the striker is looking at a "very short period" out.

Top scorer Wood netted his 14th goal of the campaign during Tuesday night's 2-0 win at home to Reading but then felt his hamstring tighten 14 minutes after scoring the game's opener.

The targetman was subsequently substituted for returning captain Liam Bridcutt in the 33rd minute but Wood underwent a scan on Wednesday which revealed that his hamstring injury was not serious.

The 25-year-old will now have a second scan on Friday and while Monk is facing up to being without his top scorer this weekend, United's head coach is optimistic that the New Zealand international is only facing a short lay-off.

"He had a scan yesterday and he will have another one in a couple of days," said Monk.

"Like we thought, it's not too serious but whether he is available for the weekend is doubtful.

"It's definitely not one of those ones that you fear when those sorts of things happen first of all so we are looking at a very short period.

"But whether he is available for the weekend - we are very doubtful with that."

Asked if Wood was at least likely to play a part in United's Christmas games, Monk said: "For sure and that's what we are happy about with the scan that came back.

"We have to take it again in a couple of days just to re-affirm everything.

"He's doubtful for the weekend but he should be back after that period."
