Chris Sutton makes BBC Sports Personality of the Year claim relating to Leeds United

Former Premier League-winning striker Chris Sutton has made a bold claim about the BBC Sports Personality of the Year in relation to Leeds United.

The glamorous annual event celebrating the best sporting achievements throughout 2025 took place on Thursday night, and there was a very popular winner of the night’s grand prize

Rory McIlroy won the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award after completing the long-awaited achievement of completing the golf Grand Slam by winning The Masters earlier this year, as well as being part of the Europe team to win the Ryder Cup on US soil since 2012.

And even though McIlroy was selected by voters across the country, there might be one person who Leeds fans might prefer as their current favourite sportsperson, judging by recent performances.

Former Blackburn Rovers and Chelsea forward Chris Sutton has boldly declared that if Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s fine run of form had begun a bit earlier, then the Leeds striker would have had his vote for the grand prize.

Writing in his usual BBC Sport column previewing each Premier League fixture of the weekend, Sutton said: “If Leeds striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin had hit this run of form a little bit earlier, he would have been my vote for Sports Personality of the Year.

“Calvert-Lewin has scored four goals in four games and his leap to score against Brentford last week was incredible.”

And I’m sure this sentiment can be shared by a lot of those who attend Elland Road week in, week out after the 28-year-old made it five goals for the Premier League season and four goals in a row to help his side secure a point away at Brentford last weekend.

‘One of the best English strikers’

Speaking after the game against Brentford, Leeds boss Daniel Farke spoke highly of his frontman and said the “sky is the limit” for Calvert-Lewin.

"My relationship with [England manager] Thomas [Tuchel] is so close and he knows if he has any questions, he can call my number and we can speak about it," Farke said.

"It always depends on the performances and I think the sky is the limit for Dominic.

"He was very unlucky in the last couple of years with injuries, but his quality was never in doubt and his CV speaks for itself.

"For me, he is one of the best English strikers in this league. Harry Kane is playing in Germany for Bayern Munich, but in the Premier League, he is definitely one of the best English strikers and he will be a key player for us going forward."
