Former Manchester United manager and current Austria boss Ralf Rangnick has come to the defence of Leeds United defender Max Wober after the 26-year-old's mistake gifted France a 1-0 win at Euro 2024 on Monday night.

Wober's first-half own goal, which he headed beyond goalkeeper Patrick Pentz, ultimately gave France all three points as Les Bleus took on Austria in Dusseldorf.

Kylian Mbappe's cross from the byline with 40 minutes on the clock glanced off the Leeds defender's forehead as he attempted to clear the danger, wrong-footing 'keeper Pentz and giving Didier Deschamps' French side the lead.

It compounded a difficult opening 45 minutes for the centre-back, who started alongside Kevin Danso at the heart of Rangnick's back four, as Wober had also picked up an early yellow card for a late challenge on Ousmane Dembele just outside the Austrian penalty area.

Shortly after the restart, the defender who spent last season on loan with Borussia Monchengladbach, careered into France's Antoine Griezmann who subsequently collided with an advertising hoarding and was fortunate not to be reprimanded by the referee.

This led to Wober's premature withdrawal as Rangnick rung the changes before the hour mark, substituting the 26-year-old for Gernot Trauner.

Speaking after the game, Rangnick said: "No one blames Maxi. It was a very unfortunate situation that he was standing right there at that moment – he can’t unscrew his head either."

Meanwhile, goalkeeper Pentz also came to his teammate's defence: “Mbappé’s ball into the middle was very sharp – you can’t blame Max for that. Things like that just happen."

Pundits on ITV Sport's coverage of the match were less understanding with Roy Keane describing the incident as 'really poor defending', suggesting Wober had 'panicked' at the cross, whilst Gary Neville questioned the Leeds man's readiness in the lead up to the own goal.
