Jack Charlton's death a sad day for Leeds United family says Whites chairman Andrea Radrizzani

CHAIRMAN Andrea Radrizzani says the passing of Whites and England legend Jack Charlton is a sad day both personally and for the whole Leeds United family.

Former Leeds centre-back and England World Cup winner Charlton passed away on Friday aged 85 after a long-term illness.

After joining the club at the age of 15 in 1950 as part of the ground staff before signing professional terms, the defender went on to make a record 773 appearances for Leeds United over a 23-year period as a player.

Charlton helped Leeds to two promotions including one as Second Division champions and then a First Division title, two Inter-Cities Fairs Cups triumphs, an FA Cup, League Cup and a Charity Shield.

His influence on the club and city of Leeds then remained strong after his retirement.

"Today is a very sad day for me and the Leeds United family as we mourn the loss of club legend Jack Charlton," said Whites chairman Radrizzani to Leeds United's official website.

“Over 23 years, he made a record 773 appearances for us and will always be remembered as a true club hero by all.

“My thoughts are with Jack’s family and friends at this sad time.

“Rest in peace Jack.”
