"Probably" - Andoni Iraola's Leeds United declaration in Liverpool defeat verdict with admission
Andoni Iraola saw his Liverpool side defeated 4-2 by Leeds United in Chicago having been 2-0 up.
Liverpool boss Andoni Iraola made a declaration about his side’s Leeds United test in his assessment of Sunday night’s 4-2 defeat to Daniel Farke’s Whites in Chicago.
Iraola’s Reds went into Sunday evening’s friendly at Soldier Field looking to make it three wins out of three from their USA tour after victories against Wrexham and Sunderland - and another win looked imminent at the break.
Goals from Luke Chambers and Florian Wirtz had the Reds 2-0 up at the interval but Leeds produced a brilliant comeback after the break as a brace from Dominic Calvert-Lewin plus strikes from Brenden Aaronson and Sean Longstaff sealed a 4-2 victory for Daniel Farke’s Whites.
Speaking post match, Iraola admitted the result was not what his side wanted but the Reds boss declared that Leeds had provided his men with their “most useful” friendly of the summer given the nature of the game.
“I think we learn a lot of things,” said Iraola, as quoted by Liverpool’s official website.
“Obviously it's not the result you want but I think [it was] probably the most useful friendly we played – in a positive way in the first half and in a negative way in the second half. I think we've learned a lot from today and I think we can take good conclusions and solve some things.”
Reflecting on the tour as a whole, Iraola said: “At the end, you can see straight away that this is a massive club [with] all the supporters that we have, even overseas. We want to get ready [for] the start of the season – that is when people want to see us play well and get results.”
