Leeds United midfielder Anton Stach issues message after Germany return with vow
Anton Stach made his Germany return against the Netherlands on Thursday evening.
Leeds United midfielder Anton Stach has issued a proud message after his return to action for Germany with an admission and vow.
Former Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp’s appointment as new boss of Germany led to an immediate international recall for Stach who was named in Klopp’s huge 44-man squad for the upcoming Nations League games during the three-week September and October international break.
Stach’s fine form during his first season at Leeds initially led to his first Germany call-up for nearly three years for March’s international friendlies under former boss Julian Nagelsmann.
The Whites star appeared on course for a place in the team’s World Cup squad but Stach suffered an ankle injury towards the end of the season, casting any potential place in the squad in doubt. The injury was ultimately not serious yet Stach was still omitted from Nagelsmann’s squad for this summer’s tournament in the USA, Mexico and Canada.
But Klopp’s appointment offered a fresh chance for Stach who was named on the bench for Thursday evening’s Nations League clash in the Netherlands and brought on for Felix Nmecha four minutes after the hour mark.
Nmecha’s 32nd-minute strike had Klopp’s men on course for a 1-0 victory but Liverpool’s Cody Gakpo struck in the 92nd minute to seal a 1-1 draw.
Taking to his Instagram page, Stach declared his pride at being back in action for his country but admitted natural disappointment at seeing three points become one with a vow that his team would keep working.
Stach wrote: “Proud to be on the pitch for Germany again. Obviously disappointed that we couldn’t win yesterday. But we keep working.”
