Star back but pair out as Daniel Farke issues Leeds United team news for Birmingham FA Cup clash
Daniel Farke has provided his Leeds United team news for Sunday’s FA Cup clash at Birmingham City.
Daniel Farke has one star back but two others out for Sunday’s fourth round FA Cup clash at Birmingham City, accompanied with a Leeds United selection warning.
Whites boss Farke was without three key players for Tuesday night’s Premier League clash at Chelsea for which Anton Stach and Pascal Struijk were sidelined with hip injuries and Dominic Calvert-Lewin was ill.
Stach suffered a hip problem prior to last Friday night’s huge 3-1 win at home to Nottingham Forest, following which Struik was also suffering from a hip issue.
The pair were both ruled out of Tuesday’s trip to Chelsea ahead of the game, prior to which Farke had revealed that striker Calvert-Lewin had been unwell.
Farke had said at Monday’s pre-Chelsea press conference that Calvert-Lewin had been struggling a little with illness but with hope that the striker would be available to face the Blues.
The Whites no 9, though, failed to make the matchday squad, joining Struijk and Stach as three key men out.
Farke said earlier in the week that Stach would probably just be back for next weekend’s Premier League clash at Aston Villa.
The Whites boss held his pre-Birmingham City press conference on Friday afternoon, at which he confirmed that Calvert-Lewin was now back but with Stach and Struijk both “still on the road of rehab” and unlikely to feature at St Andrew’s.
Farke also warned that no risks would be taken with any players over whom there were doubts, the desire to progress in the FA Cup balanced with the clear priority of Premier League survival.
“They are still on the road of rehab”
Farke said: “We will see, of course we want to go into the next round, there is no doubt about this.
“But of course, on the other hand, the league and to achieve survival has priority and for that we won’t risk any player where we have any doubts.
“I don’t think that Anton Stach and Pascal Struijk will be involved for this game because they are still on the road of rehab.
“Dominic Calvert-Lewin is back after his illness so good news with him and then we take some late decisions where we think okay, which player is ready also to play another game and who needs perhaps to be a bit looked after.
“But overall no new injuries after the Chelsea game and everyone who was available for this game should also be available for the Birmingham game.”
Whites defender Sebastiaan Bornauw was spotted with ice around his ankle after being substituted ten minutes into the second half of Tuesday night’s clash at Stamford Bridge, shortly after colliding with Karl Darlow for Chelsea’s second goal.
Asked if there were any after effects from that and if that could lead to a change in defence or in goal, Farke said: “Just a bruise so they should both be available.”
January window signing and Brighton loanee Facundo Buonanotte is also available for Sunday’s contest and not cup tied.
