Leeds United 4 Bristol City 0 live: Recap and reaction as Whites spark huge party
Leeds face Bristol City in their final home game of the season tonight.
Promotion is secured - but Leeds United must beat Bristol City tonight to keep their Championship title destiny in their own hands.
Saturday’s 5-0 win for Burnley at QPR has left Leeds second and three points behind the Clarets but with two games left as opposed to just one remaining for their Turf Moor rivals.
Despite Saturday’s romp for the Clarets, Daniel Farke’s Whites also still have a much better goal difference of plus 60 compared to Burnley’s plus 51.
Here, upon landing at Elland Road, we will bring you all of the pre-match build-up to this evening’s visit of fifth-placed Bristol City followed by in-game updates and then post match analysis and reaction.
Amazing scenes
Absolutely brilliant scenes as each and every squad member is read out to make their entrance to the pitch with the stands packed to the rafters. The squad then gather in the centre circle as they are treated to a very, very loud Marching On Together, after which the champagne is sprayed and Farke gets an absolute dousing. The whole squad, staf and their families then take in a lap of honour in scenes of sheer jubilation. Nice moment at the end as plenty of fans who have stayed behind after most have gone sing Farke’s name and he heads over to the Kop to give them a salute.
Full time 4-0!!!
GOAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLL!!!!!!!!
Largie again! 4-0.
Here comes Byram
Will be the final sub. On for Firpo. 4 minutes of added time
Two more subs
Joseph and Guilavogui on for Aaronson and Tanaka. Attendance is 36,310.
GOOOAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLL!
Ramazani!!!! Beautiful, pass, pass, pass, Firpo played in down the left, low cross, Ramazani coming in at the far post and can’t miss. Must have been on the pitch for less than a minute.
Leeds double change
Bamford and Ramazani on for Piroe and Gnonto.
A first shot!
For Bristol City. Twine gets it wrong though from a cross and it flies well wide.
More chances
Firpo heads just wide from a corner, Aaronson then smashes a shot over the bar when he looked sure to score arriving at the back post to a Bogle header back across goal after a deep Solomon cross. Solomon is causing chaos.
GOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLLL!!!
GNONTO!!!!! But what a ball by Piroe. From a Bristol attack, Leeds win the ball back, get it to Piroe who turns on halfway and sprays an amazing ball over the top for Gnonto, taking put the whole defence, Gnonto is one on one, takes his time and then, bang, clinical finish. Elland Road erupts.
My word, amazing double save
O’Leary denies Firpo and then Gnonto and Bogle then hits the post, corner cleared. Tanaka is then booked a few minutes later, possibly for dissent. O’Leary has had a blinder in the Bristol net.
Back underway
No changes, a second goal kills it.
Half time report - Leeds United 1 Bristol City 0
In a sea of yellow and amid outrageous noise levels, Leeds immediately pushed Bristol City back and created a great chance with just three minutes on the clock.
A very clever through ball from Joel Piroe released Junior Firpo whose low cross flew just in front of Jayden Bogle who looked to the heavens at missing out.
Seven minutes later, Manor Solomon cut in from the left and produced a low shot which keeper Max O'Leary parried away but dangerously close to Willy Gnonto following in.
Gnonto was unable to reach the ball but then fired in two efforts himself, one which sailed over the bar and another which went wide with 14 minutes on the clock.
Leeds then had the ball in the back of the net a couple of minutes later through Solomon who slammed home from a Piroe square ball but Piroe had already been flagged offside.
Another good chance followed in the 20th minute as Brenden Aaronson was slipped in down the left but his low shot was well saved by O'Leary and forced behind for a corner.
Bristol City survived the first corner which was cleared for another one which produced a scramble which the Robins looked to have survived.
But Leeds had other ideas and a lovely cross from Solomon towards the back post picked out Tanaka who was left free as a bird to apply a beautiful calm finish, stroking the ball home on the volley as O'Leary came flying out at him.
Within one minute of the restart Leeds almost doubled their advantage, Ilia Gruev playing in Solomon one on one but an excellent save by the already very busy O'Leary denied the Whites winger.
With Leeds cruising and again impressing, United's fans made their feelings known with a very loud chant for boss Daniel Farke.
The onslaught continued and a fierce drive from Solomon flew off the head of a Robins defender for a corner, preventing O'Leary from making another save.
After a superb piece of skill by Aaronson, Piroe was the next to go close with a shot that was deflected behind for a corner from which Tanaka almost doubled his tally and again at the back post as he sent a header into the side netting.
The best it got for City was a cross from Marcus McGuane that sailed through the box but harmlessly, missing the head of Ross McCrorie at the back post.
As the Robins finally had a bit of possession, a ball to the edge of the box caused a bit of panic as Karl Darlow failed to gather the ball but very strong defending by Ethan Ampadu cleared the danger.
Within seconds, Leeds had another chance at the other end and Farke wanted a penalty as Piroe was hauled down in the box but referee James Bell wasn't having it.
In two minutes of added time, Leeds made one last push for a second but Gnonto saw his shot blocked before the Robins cleared and somehow ended the half only one goal down.
Leeds United v Bristol City: Darlow; Bogle, Rodon, Ampadu, Firpo; Tanaka, Gruev; Gnonto, Solomon, Aaronson, Piroe. Subs: Meslier, Cairns, Byram, Wober, Guilavogui, Ramazani, Gray, Joseph, Bamford.
A bit better
From Bristol City now who are having a few touches but only after more Whites chances, should be out of sight. And ultimately City yet to have a shot.
Patrick Bamford......
“He’ll sing what he wants” is the chant from the Elland Road faithful as he warms up, Bamford smiles. Then we have the Wilder chant, of course, Before that, whole ground with a very loud chant for Daniel Farke.
Almost 2-0
Solomon played in one on one but very good save by O’Leary.
GOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLL!!
AAAAAAAAAAAAAOOOOOOOO!!! What a lovely finish. With 22 minutes on the clock. Bristol City were getting pummelled and it looked only a matter of time. Aaronson was played in down the left but his low shot was well saved by O’Leary who saved with his legs to force the ball behind for a corner. The first corner was cleared for another one which caused a scramble which Bristol somehow survived, but the ball was then played to Solomon out left and he dinked a lovely cross over for Tanaka at the back post. The marking - or lack of it - was criminal - but what a finish by Tanaka, calmly stroking a first time volley underneath O’Leary.
Robins saved by the flag
Piroe played in but is offside, early flag but not many noticed it, square ball for Solomon who slams home and place erupts before realising its offside.
CLOSE AGAIN!
Solomon shot from the left after cutting in, parried away by keeper O’Leary and Gnonto only just misses out following in. Two good chances in the first ten minutes. Gnonto then has two attempts, one which flies over and another wide. Possession stats must be incredible.
GREAT CHANCE! All Leeds.
Lovely ball from Piroe through to Firpo, low cross just misses Bogle although he looked offside. A great chance in the third minute, very clever pass from Piroe. Leeds look right at it, Bristol City have barely touched the ball.
UNDERWAY!
Atmosphere is crazy, noise loudest ever. Leeds already bossing possession.
All the tunes
We’ve had The Only Way Is Up and now we have Gold for Darlow. A very big cheer for Daniel Farke as his name was read out in the team announcements. Another big cheer as the players head back in after warm-ups. All set at Elland Road, live updates here.
Nice, relaxed party atmosphere
Lovely weather, lots of chatter in bustling stands, loads of parents taking photos with their kids holding the yellow scarves etc, general good vibes. The scarves have gone down really very well. Warm ups getting underway.
Pair still missing then
Dan James and Joe Rothwell both still out, keeper Alex Cairns also replaces Isaac Schmidt on the bench. Two changes for Bristol City who will be absolutely no mugs and a Whites win here is far from a foregone conclusion, despite Leeds being heavy odds on - 4-9. Still think Leeds will be too good though - 3-1 to Leeds maybe.
Unchanged FC
Leeds United v Bristol City: Darlow; Bogle, Rodon, Ampadu, Firpo; Tanaka, Gruev; Gnonto, Solomon, Aaronson, Piroe. Subs: Meslier, Cairns, Byram, Wober, Guilavogui, Ramazani, Gray, Joseph, Bamford.
Dan James!
Is here. Having his photo taken with a few fans pictchside, whether he is in the squad remains to be seen. Team news shortly.
Leeds United arrivals at Elland Road
Illan Meslier the first out and heads for a chat with Marathe. Ampadu and then Harry Gray follow. Ampadu heads over to Marathe too as Gray takes it all in again on the pitch, looking very relaxed. Very confident and talented young man, just 16. Gruev and Joseph the only others to take to the turf, both have an embrace with Marathe before going back in. No sign of James or Rothwell.
Good evening from Elland Road!
A glorious evening, around 20 degrees, blue skies, sun is sunshine and everyone has a real spring in their step - as you can imagine. Leeds United are heading for the Premier League - but will it be as champions? Needs a win this evening really if the answer is yes. But the main job is already done and this should be a night to enjoy for everyone with the players coming back out on the pitch after the game for a promotion presentation. Oh, and there’s also a free scarf for everyone tonight. Elland Road stage is set and quite the sight. Team news to come at 7pm. James and Rothwell the big question marks.
In the meantime, here is the early Leeds team news and predicted Whites line-up for the 8pm kick-off which is being broadcast on Sky Sports Football, Sky Sports Main Event and Sky Sports Ultra HDR.
After the match, the first-team squad will return to the pitch for a promotion presentation in front of supporters. Leeds have issued the important request of asking fans to remain seated with a reminder that the use of pyrotechnics and incursions of the pitch is not acceptable and against the law.
Leeds team news
Doubts surround both Dan James (hamstring) and Joe Rothwell (calf) although there were no actual updates on the pair at Friday’s pre-match press conference.
James was not risked in Easter Monday’s home clash against Stoke City due to ‘awareness ‘in his hamstring. The winger had returned from his hamstring injury as a second-half substitute in Good Friday’s win at Oxford United.
Rothwell, meanwhile, has missed United’s last five games with a calf injury. Farke, though, had been optimistic that Rothwell would be back for the last two games of the season. Pascal Struijk is out for the remainder of the season with a foot fracture.
Predicted Leeds line-up: Darlow; Bogle, Rodon, Ampadu, Firpo; Tanaka, Gruev; Gnonto, Solomon, Aaronson, Piroe.
