"Stood out" - Former Leeds United coach appointed new boss of Championship side on three-year deal

A former Leeds United coach has been appointed the new manager of a Championship side after standing out in the interview process.
Michael Skubala was appointed head coach of United’s under-21s back in July 2022 and his impressive work led to him being named interim head coach in February 2023 after the sacking of Jesse March.
Skubala was then promoted to first team coach whilst still undertaking under-21s duties after the appointment of Javi Gracia but the 43-year-old was then appointed the new head coach of Lincoln City in November 2023 for his first job in senior management.
Lincoln only narrowly missed out on a place in the play-offs in the 2023-24 campaign before an 11th-placed finish in Skubala’s first full season in charge but the 2025-26 season saw his team smash records en route to promotion as League One champions on 103 points.
It means the Imps are heading for their first season in the Championship but not with Skubala who has now left the club to be appointed the new manager of fellow Championship side Bristol City on a three-year deal.
Hailing his appointment, Bristol City CEO Charlie Boss told Bristol City’s official website: “We are delighted that Michael has agreed to be our new manager. Michael’s leadership qualities stood out through the interview process and were clearly evident during a title-winning season with Lincoln City. We are excited about what he will bring to Bristol City.
“As we build towards the new season, we now have in place a sporting director in James Ellis, who has experience of the highest level of club football, and a manager in Michael who has a track record of getting a club promoted.
“I want to thank City fans for their support as we completed our search for the right person to lead our first team and I know they will join me in giving Michael the warmest of welcomes to the West Country.”
Skubala said: “I’m delighted to take up this exciting opportunity.
“I’ve had some really positive conversations with the board and James Ellis, who have been very clear about the club’s ambition.
“I’m ready for the challenge ahead and looking forward to meeting the players, staff and supporters. Preparations for pre-season are well underway and we have an important and exciting few months ahead.”
