"Won't be here for long" - Leeds United fans in complete agreement ahead of Burnley match and call for change
Leeds United’s fans have their say ahead of tonight’s visit of Burnley.
Leeds United can kick nine points clear of the Premier League drop zone with a victory against tonight’s already-relegated visitors Burnley - but what do the club’s fans think?
Here is what our YEP Jury have had to say on this evening’s 8pm kick-off at Elland Road including complete agreement on the predictions front, a midfield change suggestion and how many points might now be needed to stay up.
NEIL GREWER
Most supporters and journalists expect 40 points to be sufficient for survival.
But we are Leeds, we create unwanted records, and most supporters now feel Leeds need north of 40 points.
So, Friday night under the lights is an opportunity to take three points and surely secure safety.
Burnley supporters have not taken their full allocation, so perhaps this indicates their expectation level.
Leeds have failed to beat Burnley over the last two seasons although in two of the three games Leeds have been the better side.
The disappointment of the FA Cup needs channelling into the number one aim of survival.
Daniel Farke has impressed recently with his team formation changes and in-match tweaks and I expect we will see similar on Friday, especially if Leeds are not ahead on 60 minutes.
I hope Burnley (with nothing to play for except pride) do not resort to the goalkeeper feigning injury scenario that is trending at the moment – this is ruining the game.
I expect Leeds to start on the front foot and hopefully score early which leads to a convincing victory.
Prediction: Leeds United 3 Burnley 0.
‘The potential to be a banana skin fixture’
ANDY RHODES
With the disappointment of Sunday’s Wembley defeat now behind us, attention quickly turns to a crucial night in the Premier League.
Leeds and Daniel Farke will hope for one more magical night under the lights at Elland Road in the kind of atmosphere we know the ground can generate.
However, Burnley are no mugs, despite their league position and relegation already being confirmed. With Scott Parker leaving Burnley the day before the game, it remains to be seen how they will set up on the night.
This could be a scrappy 1-0 win, a comfortable 4-0 rout or anywhere in between, but it also has the potential to be a banana skin fixture.
Leeds will hope Noah Okafor returns to his best after Wembley, while goals for Dominic Calvert-Lewin will be key both for the Whites and his own World Cup ambitions.
This may be a game where the defences are on top, as they were in last season’s two Championship clashes.
If Leeds can win this one, they will be on the brink of safety.
Prediction: Leeds United 1 Burnley 0.
‘We’ve often outplayed them but still lost’
DAVID WATKINS
It seems that every game Leeds United have faced recently has been of huge significance.
Each time we think we are safe, other results elsewhere make us stop and ponder whether that is the case.
The last round of games being a case in point, a fine result for Leeds at Bournemouth was eclipsed by even better results from Forest, Spurs and West Ham.
We are so close to the end of the season now that speculation about how many points we need is somewhat redundant; the results in any round of games from now on can blow predictions out of the water.
Leeds must keep gathering points until we are mathematically safe.
Beating Burnley will surely have us almost there, though, and with our three relegation rivals facing, on paper at least, tougher games against Brentford, Aston Villa and Chelsea, the hope is we’ll emerge on Monday night nine points to the good with three games left – that’s dormie three in golfing terms!
Burnley will be no pushovers – we’ve seen that in all our recent clashes, when we’ve often outplayed them but still lost.
This one has to be different, just in case those other results don’t go our way.
Prediction: Leeds United 1 Burnley 0.
‘We look a better unit – especially in midfield – with the big German included’
KEITH INGHAM
Now the dust has fallen, the Wembley 26 shirts and souvenirs put away in the drawer, it’s back to the real business we started back in August…survival!
We can look back with some comfort that our team made the last four of the FA Cup but Friday’s game with Burnley is far more important than a day out in the sun beneath the impressive Wembley arch.
It’s so important that the players in the squad give the fans a little payback and pick up a few more points to guarantee another season in the Premier League and it is so important to get three points against relegated Burnley on Friday.
We missed good chances against Chelsea and it has become a bad habit.
Unfortunately, Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s impressive season has hit a dry spell with only one goal in 18 games, it’s hoped that he can end that spell with a goal or two on Friday.
I can see Anton Stach replacing Ao Tanaka who had a poor game at Wembley. He wasn’t the only one but we look a better unit – especially in midfield – with the big German included. Karl Darlow should also return in goal.
We have to win this game and I think we will, by a couple of goals. It won’t be easy but we should have enough still in the ‘tank’ to get the result needed.
Prediction: Leeds United 3 Burnley 1.
“They won’t be here for long”
MIKE GILL
Friday night brings a visit from our nearest Premier League neighbours although they won’t be for long.
Last season, Burnley breathed down our necks all the way as we eventually took the Championship title.
Earlier this season, they beat a faltering United side 2-0 at Turf Moor and there was little to choose between the two sides.
Since November our paths have diverged and Burnley have been relegated.
Nobody needs to be reminded that the Whites still have work to do to ensure that they don’t join them.
There is an important job to be done before a collective sigh of relief can be exhaled.
Three points against the Clarets will not produce mathematical certainty but it would go a long way towards it.
United must put thoughts of Sunday’s FA Cup semi-final disappointment behind them and treat this fixture with the ruthlessness that we are accustomed to at Elland Road.
The Whites have coped well with injuries this season and the squad should have enough cover to face this game with quiet confidence.
Prediction: Leeds United 3 Burnley 1.
