"That's poor" - Leeds United fans in Crystal Palace disagreement with expectation of 'superhuman' pair
Leeds United’s fans have had their say on Sunday’s return to Premier League action at Crystal Palace.
Leeds United will resume their fight for Premier League survival with Sunday’s clash at Crystal Palace - but what do the club’s fans think? Here is what our YEP Jury have had to say on Sunday’s 2pm kick-off at Selhurst Park including disagreement on the predictions front and expectation over a superhuman Whites pair.
ANDY RHODES
Following some poor results before the FA Cup break, Leeds United now travel down to London in search of much needed points.
There is still a long way to go this season but Daniel Farke will know that points on the board now send a strong message to the teams around them in the table.
To get the points, he may be tempted to call upon some of his fringe players who performed well against Norwich.
Lukas Nmecha in particular was good and, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin in a bit of a goal drought, and Brenden Aaronson similarly not providing in attack, Farke may change things up.
There are nine games to go and Leeds sit 15th in the table, which they would have absolutely taken at the start of the season.
However, the fact that just three points separate them and West Ham in 18th is the major concern.
It will be one of four teams, including Spurs and Nottingham Forest, that takes that final relegation place. Performances are now needed to ensure it’s not Leeds.
Prediction: Crystal Palace 1 Leeds United 2.
“These two appear superhuman”
NEIL GREWER
Leeds United face a Crystal Palace side sitting just two league places higher but with seven points more and a points total of 38 – virtual safety – and crucially played in European competition on Thursday.
I expect Palace will be more focused on Europe than the league, at least this week, and this improves Leeds’ chances of leaving London with at least a point.
Following FA Cup success last week, Daniel Farke has had a full week to plan for this game and with virtually full squad availability.
Joe Rodon and Dominic Calvert-Lewin will have benefited from a complete rest last week whilst only Gabi Gudmundsson and Ethan Ampadu played a significant part, but these two appear superhuman.
I expect to see the usual three centre-back formation (although which three?) and starts for Karl Darlow, Anton Stach and Brenden Aaronson with Willy Gnonto and Dan James again missing out.
Daniel Farke will be back on the touchline following his ridiculous ban, but Palace will not be as disruptive, negative, or horrible as Sunderland were in the last league game.
Prediction: Crystal Palace 1 Leeds United 2.
“Probably consider themselves safe”
DAVID WATKINS
The relatively comfortable win against Norwich City last weekend was a welcome confidence boost for players and fans alike, albeit we started that game with few regular starters, so it’s not too relevant to our next game, against Crystal Palace.
Leeds walloped Palace 4-1 at the end of December, and their record since then has not been great.
In particular, they have only managed one home win since then, a 1-0 victory over Wolves three weeks ago.
In their other recent league games at Selhurst Park they have lost to Spurs, Burnley and Chelsea and drawn with Aston Villa.
Palace have a 10-point cushion to the relegation zone, so they probably consider themselves safe, and they could be forgiven for concentrating their efforts on their UEFA Conference campaign, although their FA Cup run, as current holders, came to an early and humiliating halt at Macclesfield in the third round.
It’s a difficult one to predict, especially remembering our historic issues when playing in London, but this game, like the Sunderland game, feels important.
Only three teams – Spurs, Burnley and Forest have a worse current home form record than Palace… but only three have a current worse away record than Leeds! It feels like another draw.
Prediction: Crystal Palace 1 Leeds United 1.
“To be honest, that’s poor”
KEITH INGHAM
After getting through to the last eight of the FA Cup, attention turns back to the more important task of staying in the Premier League.
A couple of those on duty on Sunday did their chances of a starting place no harm.
I’d guess that Daniel Farke will stick with the majority that started against Sunderland again on Sunday at Palace.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin missed the Cup tie with a ‘knock’ but he says he'll be fit for the weekend. If he isn’t, Lukas Nmecha will lead the line and I’d like to see Willy Gnonto either alongside or just behind him.
Jaka Bijol could be preferred to James Justin in the back three. The centre-back was superb against Norwich.
Palace look safe after their 3-1 win at Spurs and had an important UEFA Conference League game on Thursday so it will have to be seen if they rest players for the second leg next Thursday.
Earlier in the season Leeds beat the Eagles 4-1 in one of the best displays of the season.
Leeds have only one win on the road this season – a 3-1 win at Wolves back in September – and to be honest, that’s poor despite getting a few points away from home against top-placed teams. A win is needed and I think they just might sneak it.
Prediction: Crystal Palace 1 Leeds United 2.
“Should be seen as the aberration that it was”
MIKE GILL
It's back to the business of survival again on Sunday and a trip to south London.
Crystal Palace are our opponents and it’s true to say that they are having a mixed bag of results this season. They sit in 13th place with seven points more than United.
Most recently, they have beaten Spurs away after losing at Manchester United.
Their manager. Oliver Glasner is even more of an enigma.
He is clearly at odds with the club’s owners and has made a couple of strange statements since the January transfer window.
These pronouncements could easily be interpreted to say; ‘Please sack me!’.
Nevertheless, he is a successful manager and this game will be another tough challenge for United.
As the final stages of the season approach, it is important that the Whites kick on to avoid too much drama at the finish.
The disappointment against Sunderland should be seen as the aberration that it was and should be forgotten.
At Selhurst Park, Palace have won three times this season.
They have drawn on six occasions and lost five times.
I’m going for a draw.
Prediction: Crystal Palace 2 Leeds United 2.
