'Grow up' - Tim Sherwood slams Crystal Palace star for 'disrespectful' Leeds United red card reaction

Leeds United defender Gabriel Gudmundsson's red card was met with jubilation from one Crystal Palace player.

A furious Tim Sherwood labelled Jaydee Canvot ‘disrespectful’ and an ‘absolute disgrace’ after he celebrated Gabriel Gudmundsson’s red card on Sunday.

Canvot could be seen excitedly celebrating in the background as Gudmundsson was shown a controversial red card during first-half added-time. Referee Thomas Bramall had seemingly forgotten about an earlier booking and quickly brandished a yellow for a soft foul on Ismaila Sarr.

Despite the man advantage for over 45 minutes, Canvot and his Palace teammates failed to register a single shot on target as Leeds defended brilliantly. And former Premier League manager Sherwood had some honest words for the young defender.

“I couldn’t believe what I was looking at,” he told Sky Sports. “It’s a poor decision in the first place because it’s not a second yellow card for Gudmundsson. If he’d remembered booking him the first time he’d have never sent him off for that.

“The Palace players got around him and said ‘you’ve already given him a yellow’. But to celebrate like that is an absolute disgrace. What are you doing there? It baffled me, it really did.

“Why are you doing that? I just don’t like it. I think it's disrespectful. If I was a Leeds player, I’d have said ‘grow up mate, what are you doing?’

“What did it actually guarantee you? It didn’t guarantee them anything. They’d have lost the game if Dominic Calvert-Lewin scored his penalty anyway. Just concentrate on playing football, all this nonsense has annoyed me.”

Wider reaction to Gudmundsson red and Canvot reaction

Sherwood echoed the thoughts of another former Premier League player, with Wayne Rooney also labelling Canvot’s reaction a ‘disgrace’ on Match of the Day. Ex-referee Dermot Gallagher thought it was funny - he also believed Gudmundsson was correctly sent off.

Questions have been raised as to whether a player should be punished for a reaction like Canvot’s which advocates for sending off fellow professionals. Sherwood was shown a similar example involving Newcastle United’s Jacob Murphy and had his say on whether sanctions should follow.

“I don’t think you can punish it,” he added. “It’s a bit similar to showing an imaginary card to the referee [an act which is usually punished with a yellow card]. I don’t want to see it, it leaves a bad taste in my mouth to be honest.”

Frustration will linger but Leeds can take pride in their second-half performance at Selhurst Park. Daniel Farke made some defensive changes and his side fought tooth and nail to maintain a clean sheet.

Palace failed to cause any real problems for Leeds, the only scare coming when Jefferson Lerma’s header was swiftly ruled out for offside. The point keeps Leeds as they were before the weekend, with West Ham, Nottingham Forest and Tottenham Hotspur also drawing.
