Leeds United 'aware' of secondary position need in final days of January transfer window
Leeds United have just 11 more days to strengthen their squad in the January transfer window.
Leeds United boss Daniel Farke admits he's open to the idea of strengthening his options in a position other than centre forward.
The Whites have made an enquiry for Wolves striker Jorgen Strand Larsen this month as they look to give Farke another targetman as cover and competition for Dominic Calvert-Lewin.
But as he previewed Monday's game at Everton, for which Gabriel Gudmundsson is a slight doubt due to a groin issue, Farke was happy to admit he would consider a signing in that area too if a perfect candidate emerged.
Earlier this week Jack Harrison went out on loan to Serie A relegation battlers Fiorentina, which was the player's wish according to Farke. The winger was seen as cover for Gudmundsson, at least as a wing-back, and his departure leaves Leeds light of left footers who could slot in there.
"I don't expect a big fluctuation, we've done too well, we can be pretty picky," said Farke.
"We've allowed Harry [Gray] to go for his development and Jack [Harrison] because it was his wish. We've brought Facundo [Buonanotte] in so it's a very healthy balance.
"Theoretically there would be space to bring in perhaps one more outfield player in these terms because Jack was also a natural back-up option even on the wing-back position for Gabi Gudmundsson. This is something we're aware of but I don't expect a major overhaul right now."
Farke says he's unaware of any others who harbour desires to leave the club in the January window and said it was Harrison's professionalism that convinced the manager to allow him to go to Italy.
“Perhaps not a natural replacement, but he definitely can play there”
He saw Harrison giving everything in training and in the FA Cup game at Derby County, even while talks were ongoing over a loan with a view to a permanent move to Florence.
While he insists he will always listen to a player who behaves correctly, Farke says Leeds could not let too many others leave. And if there is a chance to address the situation at left-back then Leeds will 'stay awake' to the possibility.
"We have different options," he said. "Of course, there is not a natural left wing-back with the left foot and in our squad that's definitely, for sure.
“And for that, like I mentioned, in this position, if there is a perfect, perfect option, we won't fall asleep. That's definitely for sure. But we have also other options.
“So we have James Justin, a player who has played more or less the same amount of games on the left-back or left wing-back position. Of course, he can play also there.
“It's perhaps not a natural replacement, because he's a right-footed player, but he definitely can play there. Sam Byram has played a lot for us also a left back. He can can also do this.
“There's also a chance to position a more offensive minded player like we did with Willy in the FA Cup and in the final stages of the Fulham game."
