Daniel Farke on Leeds United place in long-term Premier League table, target and Crystal Palace warning
Daniel Farke on Leeds United’s impressive form in both the short term and long term ahead of Sunday’s visit of Crystal Palace.
Whites boss Daniel Farke has delivered a proud but cautious verdict on Leeds United’s position in a long-term Premier League table with a definite first points target and Crystal Palace warning.
Leeds are approaching Sunday’s visit of Palace sat third in the very early Premier League table after four games played but Farke’s men would also sit fifth in a table taken since the 3-2 defeat at Manchester City last November.
Farke says United’s form since the transformation of the side at City can now be considered no-incidence and that everybody involved with the club can be proud of the efforts in the 29 games that have followed.
United’s form in both the short and long term has had several pundits tipping the Whites to finish in a European qualification spot but Farke has sounded a warning about just how quickly fortunes can change in again declaring the initial aim is to once again achieve survival by getting to 40 points.
Leeds have eight points from their first four games played - five more than Sunday’s visitors Palace - but Farke has warned that the Eagles themselves could have been sitting on a similar tally if having the rub of the green in their opening fixtures.
Asked by the YEP if there was now a reset of expectations or how easy it was to keep a lid on things amid United being talked up for Europe, Farke said: “In general, it's no coincidence if you deliver over a long-term period, I would say so to deliver in seven, eight months at this level.
"Someone told me more or less like we would sit on the long-term table since winter or whatever since November in position five and there's no coincidence anymore.
"It's not just a good period, it's quality what we're delivering and everyone can be proud of this and take also lots of confidence.
"But you know in this league nothing is for granted and the momentum can change pretty really quickly.
“If we think right now we can be big time, it's the first step to fail”
"Performance wise, Crystal Palace could easily sit on seven or nine points and there would be a big, big hype but being unlucky, a red card, hitting the post a few times and missing an unbelievable amount of chances leads to less points and then the momentum is not there that much on Premier League level.
"We are fully aware, if we think right now we would have already achieved too much and think we can be big time, it's the first step to fail and we won't be successful at all so the table at the moment is not important.
"What is important is that we are already on eight points after four games.
"This is quite good but eight points won't be enough to achieve what we want to achieve, and the first step is always like, make sure that we win 40 points, make sure also that you win it as quick as possible and if you have done that and then there are still a few games left and there's more to come I would definitely take this anyhow.
"But my only aim and my only focus is to make sure that we win the 40 points and that we play a second season in a row and also like a solid season on Premier League level and this is the only thing that matters for myself and my boys."
