Ethan Ampadu picks out standout moment from Leeds United season which even eclipsed Man Utd triumph

Captain Ethan Ampadu on the standout moment of Leeds United’s first season back in the Premier League.

Whites captain Ethan Ampadu has picked out the standout moment from Leeds United’s first season back in the Premier League - which even surpassed April’s brilliant win against Manchester United at Old Trafford.

Daniel Farke’s Whites successfully navigated their first season back in the country’s top flight in sealing a 14th-placed finish which left Leeds eight points clear of the drop zone despite the final day defeat at West Ham.

A fine first year back in the Premier League notably featured an Elland Road victory against bitter rivals Chelsea, an FA Cup semi-final date at Wembley and perhaps top of the list an historic league win against arch rivals Manchester United at Old Trafford.

Leeds had not beaten the Red Devils in the league since 1981 but a Noah Okafor brace sealed a 2-1 victory in April’s clash at Old Trafford which Ampadu has since heard was the standout moment of the season for many fans.

The skipper admits such a historic victory was undoubtedly a highlight but that ultimately the moment that his team knew they were safe from relegation has to be the standout pick.

Having already booted clear of the drop zone, United’s top-flight survival was sealed with three games to go on Sunday, May 10 when Arsenal recorded a dramatic 1-0 win at relegation-bound West Ham.

“That was definitely the standout moment for us all”

Fresh form signing his new four-year deal, Ampadu was asked by LUTV for his standout moment of the season and said: “Definitely the game against Man United.

"I think not just for the players playing and the staff involved but as a club as a whole, to have not won there in the league for 40-something years, I could see how much that meant to people and to hear that was the stand out moment for a lot of people around the city was amazing.

"But I think definitely that moment at the end of the season where we were all together watching the result that kept us in the Premier League. That was definitely the stand out moment for us all."

Pressed on that ultimately being the moment were the job that Leeds set out to do had been achieved, Ampadu agreed: "That was our target at the start of the season, to stay in the Premier League, and obviously that was the moment where it as fully done.

"So it was definitely a good evening to enjoy with everyone."
