Everton boss David Moyes reveals keys to comeback against 'powerful' Leeds United

Everton boss David Moyes had to mastermind a comeback to see his side take a 1-1 draw against Leeds United.

Everton boss David Moyes felt a combination of his half-time changes and a formation swap took back control against a 'strong, powerful' Leeds United and led to their comeback.

The Whites went ahead in the first half through James Justin's first Premier League goal for the club, on their first visit to Hill Dickinson Stadium. Leeds were by far the better side and Everton were booed off at the break by sections of their disgruntled support.

But Moyes sent on Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and Jarrad Branthwaite at the break and matched Leeds' formation, and the second half played out very differently.

Everton piled on the pressure and though Leeds kept them at arms' length for a long period, eventually the hosts found a way through and Thierno Barry found the net.

Moyes was disappointed by what he saw from his side in the first half and struggled to explain why, explaining that he took off teen Harrison Armstrong because he found it difficult against a 'strong, powerful' Leeds team.

"I was pleased that we got something back, we were really poor in the first half," said Moyes. "It was really difficult to put your finger on how and why. We were set up for the game and realised how big a game it was. Got more control in the second half, controlled them more and got a goal from it.

"I think it was a bit of both [matching Leeds' formation and half-time subs]. We couldn't quite contain them as well as I would have liked in the first half, we knew what they would do but didn't make it work. I thought they made a big difference when they came on."

Barry's goal came when he darted to the front post and beat Sebastiaan Bornauw to the ball, finishing high into Karl Darlow's net. Moyes believes the youngster is starting to find his feet in the English top flight.

"There's a lot of strikers in the Premier League cost a lot of money and it's not been easy for them either," said Moyes.

"We've not been creating a lot of chances. He's a young French U21 international finding his way. His English was okay but not great. I think he's just getting settled in and used to the whole club, the Premier League, what's expected, the intensity of the league. He's getting himself a few goals. If you bring a 9 in you want him to score.

“We need to try create a few more chances so he can get a few more. Got across the defender and finished it, it was a really good run. His training is getting better, his levels are improving."

Everton were without star loanee Jack Grealish who picked up a serious ankle injury and Moyes hopes to discover the full extent of the problem in the coming days.

"We're getting closer to knowing," he said, "We're waiting on the surgeon saying what he thinks is the right choice. Hopefully we can update very shortly."
