Brighton boss Hürzeler issues 'should have won' verdict after Leeds United smash and grab

Fabian Hurzeler saw his highflying Brighton side suffer a last gasp 1-0 defeat to Leeds United at Elland Road.

Brighton boss Fabian Hürzeler said his side should have beaten Leeds United but they must bounce back from the dramatic late loss.

The Seagulls, still fighting for European qualification, created more chances in the second half and looked the more ominous but a disastrous back pass was picked off by Dominic Calvert-Lewin who found the net for his 14th Premier League goal of the season.

Leeds held on for the remainder of stoppage time to celebrate their 11th victory since returning to the top flight last summer.

"We made a good game, particular second half," said Hürzeler.

“From a rational point we should have won the game”

"We controlled it, created plenty of chances. Football is a game of errors, we had one and got punished. We have to accept it and prepare for the last game.

“We came through a lot, broke them a lot. We didn't finish efficiently. It's all about creating chances and that's what we did, especially in the second game. We have to stay very rational. When you see it from a rational point we should have won the game."

Jan Paul van Hecke was the guilty man with the back pass that sold his keeper short and put Calvert-Lewin in a position to win the game. Hürzeler said the 'great player' had his full support and Brighton must dust themselves down now to try and finish strong in the final game of the season next weekend.

"Keep our heads up," he said. "We're all disappointed now. We have belief in ourselves, we have to face adversity and bounce back as a team.

“That's why we try to bounce back and see the positives in this bad result today, this bad finish. That's my responsibility as a head coach, to keep having belief. That's what I need from everyone."
