Gabi Gudmundsson eyes clear aim with declaration on Leeds United position, ninth place view and West Ham take
Gabi Gudmundsson has set his sights on a clear Leeds United aim.
Whites star Gabi Gudmundsson has set his sights on a clear Leeds United goal with an assessment of the Premier League table and West Ham take.
Swedish ace Gudmundsson has continually impressed since joining Leeds from Lille for £10m in the summer, the 26-year-old quickly cementing down the position of clear first choice left back.
The Swede again excelled in last weekend’s hosting of Fulham, helping his team to a 1-0 victory that ensured Leeds remained eight points clear of the Premier League relegation zone after 22 games played.
After a fine recent run, Daniel Farke’s side now have the same gap to third-bottom West Ham as they do to seventh-placed Brentford, eighth-placed Newcastle United and ninth-placed Sunderland.
It has, admits Gudmundsson, left the Whites looking up the table as well as down it but ultimately still chasing one clear goal of staying up and on that front a ninth-placed finish meaning the same as ending the season in 17th.
“If you also add eight points to us”
Gudmundsson - who is battling adductor problems in his bid to be fit for Monday night’s clash at Everton - spoke to BBC Radio Leeds before Farke’s pre-Everton press conference and revelation that the Swede was a slight injury doubt.
Asked if there was a feeling now of how far Leeds could climb up the table rather than looking at what’s below them, Gudmundsson reasoned: "It's a balance because we know the quality in this group and with the help of the coaching staff.
"If you kind of think it's eight points down to West Ham, if you also add eight points to us then we climb to I don't know where it is but (level with) ninth position.
"I believe it's how you want to look at it but, again, we have one goal this season which is to stay up so I don't mind if it's just above the relegation zone or it's ninth in the league.
"For us, we have a clear goal and we just need to make sure that we work hard as we have done so far.
“That's our strengths - to show that physical quality as well and on the ball we have shown lately the qualities we have with Dominic (Calvert-Lewin) and Brenden (Aaronson) scoring goals and trying to be compact and not conceding to many goals."
