Leeds United release statement on Harry Gray Rotherham United loan decision

Leeds United say they will be monitoring 'exciting prospect' Harry Gray very closely during his first senior loan at Rotherham United.

The 17-year-old has been involved with Daniel Farke's first team squad since the age of 15, going on successive summer pre-season training camps in Germany and training with the senior players. Gray was handed a debut as a substitute at the back end of Leeds' Championship title-winning season but has not been able to make a breakthrough in the Premier League. Leeds signed Dominic Calvert-Lewin to lead the line in their relegation survival battle and though Farke has switched to a front two of sorts he has played another two summer signings alongside Calvert-Lewin, in Lukas Nmecha and Noah Okafor. Last season's top goalscorer Joel Piroe has had to be content with a place on the bench, which shows the difficulty Gray is facing in getting senior minutes.

A decision was taken this month to send him out on loan, as first reported by the YEP on Tuesday. On Wednesday Leeds confirmed the loan agreement with League One side Rotherham.

A club statement read: "Leeds United can confirm exciting prospect Harry Gray has joined Sky Bet League One side Rotherham United on loan until the end of the season. The 17-year-old has made an impressive start to the Under-21s campaign for boss Scott Gardner, netting 11 times in 13 matches across all competitions, and heads to the New York Stadium in search of further experience in the men’s game as he continues his development.

"Gray made his first team debut for the Whites on the day promotion back to the Premier League was won last campaign, featuring off the bench against Stoke City, and has continued his form into the 2025/26 season.

"The England youth international has notably impressed against EFL opposition, grabbing a brace against Accrington Stanley in the Vertu Trophy, and took the match ball home after a fine hat-trick against Scunthorpe United in the National League Cup. The striker links up with Matt Hamshaw’s Millers who are keen to climb up the League One standings in the second half of the campaign. Everyone at Leeds United would like to wish Harry well during his time in South Yorkshire and we will be monitoring his progress very closely."

The teenager is the latest in a long family line to represent Leeds. His elder brother Archie made his senior breakthrough under Farke and became a mainstay of a side that went all the way to the play-off final at Wembley, before he was sold to Tottenham Hotspur in a £40m move. Their dad Andy played for the club, along with their grandfather Frank and great uncle Eddie who is considered to be Mr Leeds United thanks to the scale of his involvement at Elland Road since his playing days.
