Leeds United given potential Harry Wilson transfer edge as summer 2025 interest reignited

Leeds United are expected to reignite interest in the Welshman following his Fulham exit.

A former Premier League striker believes Leeds United’s Welsh contingent could play a key role in landing Harry Wilson this summer.

Leeds failed with a deadline-day move for Wilson last year, at which point he had 12 months remaining on his Fulham deal. Craven Cottage chiefs opted against cashing in and now risk losing last season’s 10-goal and seven-assist talisman for free.

Sky Sports reported on Friday that Leeds are ‘working’ on a potential Wilson deal but expect competition. The 29-year-old is likely to have his pick of several Premier League options higher up the table - and with more money - than Leeds.

But what no other top-flight team can boast is such a strong contingent of Wilson’s international teammates. Karl Darlow, Joe Rodon, Ethan Ampadu and Daniel James are all key members of Daniel Farke’s squad - something Alan Smith believes could sway a decision.

“It’s always a factor having the other Welsh players there,” the former Arsenal and Leicester City striker told BestBesttingSites. “You speak to your teammates when you’re away on international duty.

“You always say, ‘what’s it like at your place? Good atmosphere? What’s the gaffer like, what’s training like?’ So Harry Wilson would have had those chats, I’m sure.”

Leeds United expecting serious Harry Wilson competition

Leeds captain Ampadu suggested as much during the June international break in which Wales played friendlies against Ghana and Romania. The midfielder, fresh off signing a four-year contract, admitted he was ‘trying to sell it to everyone’ before labelling an Elland Road move ‘a pretty easy sell’.

Club football with your international teammates might be tempting but following such an impressive season, Wilson is likely to have serious offers from higher up the food chain. And Smith doubts whether the Welsh pull will be strong enough to keep the in-demand winger away from a likely Champions League side.

“To go from Fulham to Leeds, I mean on paper it’s not a step up,” he added. “Leeds have held their own in the Premier League, but who knows how they’re going to do this coming season. Obviously, Fulham were more established.

“I think he might have other offers because he’s a very good player, Harry Wilson, who can do spectacular things. But the fact his international teammates are there doesn’t hurt at all.”
