Former Leeds United striker makes Ireland move after successful spell in Australia
A former Leeds United striker is on the move once again after enjoying a successful spell with Australian club Central Coast Mariners.
Former Leeds United striker Ryan Edmondson has joined League of Ireland club St Patricks Athletic.
The 24-year-old began his career within the youth setup at York City before joining the Whites academy in November 2017 and he went on to make just two senior appearances when he came on as a second-half substitute in Championship fixtures against Birmingham City and Queens Park Rangers. The majority of Edmondson’s senior experience during his tally at Elland Road came during loan spells elsewhere as he spent time with the likes of Aberdeen, Northampton Town, Fleetwood Town and Port Vale.
With first-team appearances limited with the Whites, the striker joined Carlisle United on a permanent deal during the summer of 2022 and went on to score seven goals in 52 appearances for the Cumbrians before making a surprise move to Australian club Central Coast Mariners 18 months later. After becoming an A-League Championship and Premiership winner and lifting the AFC Champions League Two Cup, Edmondson has now accepted an offer to join League of Ireland club St Patricks Athletic and could make his debut when his new side head to the Aviva Stadium to take on Bohemians in their season opener on Sunday week.
Speaking after putting pen-to-paper, Edmondson set his sights on enjoying a ‘really successful period’ with St Patricks and is already targeting a debut win.
He told the St Patricks official website: "It's great to be here. It's a big move for me coming from the other side of the world and it's taken a long time travelling to get here, but I'm really excited and hopefully myself and the club can have a really successful period together. I was coming towards the end of my contract at The Mariners and we were looking to come back towards European football and things like that.
"The Gaffer (Stephen Kenny) rang me and explained his ambitions and where he wants the club to go and that really drove me towards signing. He thinks that I can add to the squad and play a part in that. We're halfway through the the season in Australia so I'm already match fit and up to speed so I'll be able to get involved straight away with the boys on the training pitch. And let's hope when it comes to February 8th we can go to Aviva Stadium, collect three points and give the fans something to cheer for."
