Leeds United star continues amazing international run but setback follows after Whites man decision
A setback followed upon a Leeds United star’s fresh international call.
Leeds United star Jaka Bijol bagged another good chunk of minutes for Slovenia on Sunday - but a setback followed after a decision was taken with the Whites defender.
Signed from Udinese last summer, towering centre-back Bijol enjoyed a particularly strong second half to his first season at Leeds, the defender starting United’s last nine games and playing every single minute of seven of them.
The heavily capped Slovenia international defender was then named in head coach Bostjan Cesar’s squad for June’s two international friendlies and Bijol played every minute of Thursday evening’s 1-1 draw at home to Cyprus.
Three days later, Slovenia took in their second June friendly on Sunday evening with an away clash against England’s opening World Cup opponents Croatia at Stadion Anđelko Herjavec in Varazdin.
Bijol was handed another start for the contest, the Leeds defender continuing an amazing international run that has now seen the centre-back start Slovenia’s last 28 consecutive games.
After a goalless fist half, Croatia went ahead six minutes after the break through the country’s legendary striker Luka Modric and boss Cesar then decided to take off Bijol as part of a triple change in the 64th minute.
Slovenia then drew level with seven minutes left through Andraz Sporar but Croatia served up one final twist as Mario Pasalic netted a 93rd-minute winner to seal a 2-1 win for the hosts.
