England boss Thomas Tuchel on Leeds United's James Trafford vs Spain, Jordan Pickford stance and keeper plan

Leeds United’s new no 1 James Trafford was given a start for England in Saturday evening’s Nations League clash against world champions Spain at Wembley.

Thomas Tuchel has reflected on James Trafford’s England opportunity against Spain and the plan moving forward with a “convinced” view ahead of Tuesday evening’s next Nations League game in the Czech Republic.

United’s record signing and new no 1 James Trafford was handed a start in Saturday evening’s Nations League clash at home to world champions Spain which got off to a horrible beginning as a mistake from Marc Guehi let in Lamine Yamal to fire the visitors ahead inside the second minute.

England recovered to lead 2-1 at the interval thanks to goals from Anthony Gordon and Harry Kane but Kane then crashed a penalty against the crossbar as he looked to put the Three Lions 3-1 up after the break.

The miss proved costly, Alex Baena drawing Spain level on the hour mark and Mikel Oyarzabal firing home the winner 16 minutes from time, Trafford beaten by three clinical finishes for all three goals.

Tuchel had revealed pre-match beforehand that Trafford would play the first two games of the four during the extended international break and that Jordan Pickford would then return for the last two matches.

Speaking post match, Tuchel was keen not to overly analyse Trafford’s display but explained in further detail his plan with a “convinced” view that Trafford would benefit from playing two games in a row.

"I am convinced that it's better to get two matches and not just one”

"I'm not a specialist for goalkeeping so that it's clear for analysing performances,” said Tuchel.

"But I think he deserved to get two matches, that's why we gave him two matches.

"He started the Premier League season well, he gets minutes as number one in Leeds.

"Jordan [Pickford] did absolutely nothing wrong but we want to use this competition to see how far actually James is in these two weeks so he gets these two matches.

"I am convinced that it's better to get two matches and not just one match so he can learn from the organisation, he can learn from what happened and straight away grow into it and be a part of the defensive and offensive build up unit.

“So he gets the next match as well and then Jordan gets the two matches against Czech Republic and Croatia in Wembley."
