Leeds United striker makes vow after international setback with admission
A Leeds United striker striker has made a vow after an international setback.
Leeds United striker Joel Piroe has made a determined vow after a proud moment but ultimately a painful international setback.
Piroe was born in the Netherlands and represented his country of birth at up to under-20s level but switched international allegiance in January to Suriname, qualifying to play for the Caribbean nation through his father.
Looking to qualify for the World Cup for the first time in their history, Suriname progressed from the CONCACAF World Cup qualifiers to the inter-confederation play-offs, facing a semi-final against Bolivia with the winners taking on Iraq for a place at the tournament itself.
Piroe went into straight into the starting line-up for Friday’s Bolivia semi-final and was heavily involved as his side took a 1-0 lead, only to suffer a 2-1 defeat which ended their World Cup dreams.
Piroe, though, has vowed that Suriname will be back even stronger as he declared his pride on making his full international debut despite an admission about how it ended.
Taking to his Instagram page, Piroe posted a series of photographs of himself in action for Suriname together with the message: “A proud moment, but not how we imagined it.
“Had and felt a huge amount of support. We will come back stronger.”
