Leeds United transfer target Julian Brandt signs three-year deal with European side

A Leeds United transfer target has signed for a European side.

Leeds United summer transfer target Julian Brandt has committed his future elsewhere by signing a three-year deal with a European side.

Germany international attacking midfielder Brandt became a free agent this summer as his contract at Borussia Dortmund expired and Leeds made an offer to the 30-year-old who had been with Dortmund for seven years.

Brandt’s father Jurgen Brandt had paid a visit to Thorp Arch to speak to Leeds officials but the midfielder had the opportunity to sign for other clubs and the German has now joined Ajax Amsterdam on a three-year deal.

A statement from Ajax read: “Ajax has reached an agreement with Julian Brandt. The attacking midfielder was available on a free transfer. He has signed a three-year contract in Amsterdam, effective immediately and running until June 30, 2029.

“Brandt spent the past seven seasons with Borussia Dortmund. Prior to that, the 48-time Germany international played for Bayer Leverkusen for six seasons, among other clubs.

Jordi Cruijff, Ajax technical director, said: "Julian has chosen Ajax, and we are absolutely delighted about that.

“We have been in talks for several months, and he also had the opportunity to sign for other clubs.

“With Julian, we are bringing in a top international player with a wealth of experience and a fantastic mentality. I am convinced he will add real quality to our squad."

As per the YEP’s chief football writer Graham Smyth, Leeds have been evaluating other attacking options particularly since being unable to get Brandt signed before their pre-season tour of the USA.

Marseille forward Igor Paixão - a Leeds target last summer - features among the attackers they are looking at.
