"Silly" - West Ham star makes frank admission on Leeds United finale before lifeline emerges with vow

West Ham must beat Leeds United to stand any chance whatsoever of staying up.

West Ham star Konstantinos Mavropanos has made a frank admission ahead of Sunday’s final game of the Premier League season at home to Leeds United and his team’s survival prospects.

The third-bottom Hammers still have a chance of avoiding relegation heading into Sunday’s final day visit of the Whites following defeat for fourth-bottom Tottenham at Chelsea on Tuesday night.

A point for Spurs at Stamford Bridge would have realistically consigned the Irons to the drop due to their goal difference but a final day victory against Leeds coupled with a Spurs defeat at home to Everton would complete a great escape.

Mavropanos vowed that his side will do everything in order to record a final day victory against Daniel Farke’s team but the Greek defender made a frank admission on his team’s plight with an apology on the back of Sunday’s 3-1 defeat at West Ham.

Speaking before the potential lifeline on Tottenham’s defeat to Chelsea, Mavropanos told West Ham’s official website: “It’s looking tough.

“We have to wait and see what happens in the Tottenham game, but it’s a tough situation.

“Everything we can to win our next game”

“The only thing we can do right now is stay professional and do everything we can to win our next game.

“Again, we know the fans will be hurting because we weren’t able to do what we wanted for them today.”

Of the defeat to Newcastle, the Greek star said: “First of all, I think we have to say sorry to the fans.

“They were once again behind us, and we haven't given them what they wanted, or what we wanted to do for this club today.

“I don’t think we started well, and we didn’t have the sort of energy that we’ve had in the last couple of months. We made some silly mistakes, which is part of football sometimes, but unfortunately in this game it proved critical.

“In the second half we managed to come into the game a bit more, their goalkeeper made some good saves and we were unlucky in some situations, but the result is the result and it’s tough.”
