Leeds United coach bites at Liverpool fan mockery, Anfield library and off-camera moments

The YEP’s take and off-camera moments from Leeds United’s goalless draw at Liverpool.

Leeds United looked like a well-drilled, highly-organised defensive machine during their goalless draw with Liverpool at Anfield.

For all Arne Slot's side's individual quality, they found it almost impossible to break down their visitors who stayed compact and picked their moments to press. Now unbeaten in six, Leeds have a seven-point lead over West Ham United in the drop zone. Here's the YEP take.

Good day

Daniel Farke

Yet again his selection was met with a decidedly mixed reaction but the performance he got from the players he put into the starting XI more than justified the changes. Of the four who came in, James Justin put in the best performance and was arguably the best on the pitch for the Whites, but Leeds lost little in terms of their momentum despite such significant changes. Leeds are six unbeaten now and that run includes a pair of games against the defending champions. A lot of credit is due to the manager for the way the Whites are performing.

James Justin

What a performance, at right wing-back and at centre-back. So many times the defender nipped in to make vital challenges, or won important headers. He looked incredibly comfortable against talented attacking talent and put in a huge shift.

Sebastiaan Bornauw

To make your full Premier League debut at Anfield would be a dream come true for most players, but it could quickly become a nightmare - especially for a defender. Bornauw will remember this one for all the right reasons, however. He was very solid and looked right at home against excellent top flight opposition.

Bad day

Chris Kavanagh

Referees have a very difficult job, though they do get plenty of help from a pair of assistants, a fourth official and now VAR. Often the criticism of officials is driven by bias and hysterical tribalism, but both sides had cause for complaint with how Kavanagh refereed this game. The lack of free-kick for Anton Stach was as baffling as the yellow card for Ethan Ampadu, which felt dangerously like an attempt to pander to a screaming Kop.

Arne Slot

Liverpool could not find a way to break Leeds down and create the chances they needed and Slot appeared powerless to change it. That's twice now he has failed to get the better of Farke and Leeds. His press conference after was largely without answers, beyond 'it isn't easy.'

Anfield

The place is absolutely rocking when the teams emerge and they sing You'll Never Walk Alone, but then the atmosphere is largely dictated by the away end and refereeing decisions. It really is football in a library at times. Elland Road it was not. But herein lies a cautionary tale for 49ers with their expansion plans. A bigger ground and even success, bringing with it more football tourists, can impact the noise levels.

Off-camera

Daniel Farke emerging from the tunnel in his short sleeves for a look at the Anfield playing surface after his Sky interview and long before the warm-ups.

Alex Cairns giving Lucas Perri some advice on his kicking. The next kick was a lovely pass fired out to goalkeeper coach Ed Wootten, who joined Cairns in applauding the Brazilian.

Noah Okafor having a lengthy chat with coach Christopher John before deciding it was sufficiently cold to pull his snood up over his face and ears.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin sending a pass just over Jack Harrison's head only for the winger to swivel and bring it down with a deft touch, keep it in the air, swivel and fire it back, leaving the number 9 grinning and applauding above his head.

‘Much to the delight of travelling Leeds fans’

Liverpool's giant flag going a bit wrong as it was passed across the stand, much to the delight of travelling Leeds fans.

One of the young Liverpool mascots decking it on the slippy surface after the teams shook hands, before having a kickabout with Virgil van Dijk in front of the Kop.

Van Dijk putting up an apologetic hand after catching James Justin inadvertently in a challenge.

Farke giving Ilia Gruev some tactical instructions, with the Bulgarian offering a nod and a thumbs up to show he understood. The Leeds manager was then giving officiating advice to the linesman and fouth official after Leeds were denied a stonewall free-kick on the edge of the area, moments before Liverpool were given a free-kick.
