Leeds United 3 Liverpool 3: Incredible comeback after errors secures point in Elland Road thriller

Leeds United took on defending champions Liverpool in another game under the Elland Road lights.

Leeds United pulled off another brilliant comeback capped by a 96th-minute equaliser to seal an amazing 3-3 draw against Premier League champions Liverpool in a Saturday night thriller under the Elland Road lights.

Roared on by another very noisy and passionate crowd, Leeds began brightly and twice went close to going ahead.

A big header up the pitch from Pascal Struijk fell to Noah Okafor who fired just wide from the edge of the box with just two minutes on the clock.

Just two minutes later, Virgil van Dijk's headed clearance to a Leeds corner fell on the edge of the area to Gabriel Gudmundsson whose half volley dipped just over the bar.

Liverpool, though, gradually got going with Cody Gakpo looking lively and Leeds were saved by the frame of the goal in the 16th minute as a terrific curling effort from Curtis Jones clipped the top of the bar and away to safety.

Moments later, a big block by Struijk was needed to divert a low shot from Hugo Ekitike away for a corner.

From a Gakpo cross, Ekitike then flicked a header wide and Jayden Bogle found himself booked a few minutes later for taking out Gakpo on a rapid Reds break.

After another Leeds booking for Gudmundsson, van Dijk won a towering header at a free-kick but sent his effort over the bar.

Leeds were now struggling to make any inroads but a cross from the left that flew past Dominic Calvert-Lewin offered more promise.

The Whites, though, and in particular Bogle got away with one in the 32nd minute, Bogle losing the ball to allow a Liverpool counter in which Dominik Szoboszlai slipped in Gakpo whose cross-cum-shot flew across the box and away to safety.

After a brief Leeds response, Liverpool then went very close again five minutes before the break as a ball over the top played in Gakpo who cut inside but his shot was deflected narrowly past the post.

Huge pressure followed from the corner and subsequent crosses into the box but Leeds survived and the only action of note in three minutes of added time featured a booking for Liverpool's Conor Bradley for a sliding late challenge on Ethan Ampadu.

The half ultimately ended goalless with eight shots to Liverpool and five to Leeds but not a single one on target for either side. But how that changed after the break.

There were no changes during the interval, after which Leeds were left frustrated within seconds of the restart as a very soft free-kick was given against Calvert-Lewin.

But within the next five minutes, Leeds found themselves 2-0 down after a rapid brace from Ekitike whose first arrived via a Whites gift.

A rare individual mistake

In a rare individual mistake, Joe Rodon’s pass along the back line was wayward and allowed Ekitike to race in on goal, the Reds striker storming into the box and applying a calm low finish past Lucas Perri into the bottom left corner.

The Reds quickly pressed for a second and Leeds survived shouts for a Liverpool penalty as Ekitike tumbled to the ground in the box.

Leeds looked to clear but Pascal Struijk’s pass down the left to Gudmundsson was intercepted by Bradley who whipped in a low cross for Ekitike who applied another clinical finish to make it 2-0 with 50 minutes on the clock.

Leeds now had a mountain to climb and the Reds pressed for a third as Whites boss Daniel Farke prepared a triple change with the introductions of Willy Gnonto, Ao Tanaka and Brenden Aaronson.

The trio were eventually brought on seconds after Bogle had somehow been denied from a few yards out by Allison after a Calvert-Lewin flick on to a Gudmundsson cross although Bogle was ultimately offside.

Liverpool had gone mightily close to bagging a third just beforehand, Gakpo again cutting inside but his shot towards the bottom right corner tipped wide by a flying Perri save.

From the corner, Ibrahima Konate sent a free header straight at Perri and those missed chances came back to haunt Liverpool as Leeds amazingly sent Elland Road wild by netting twice in three minutes to draw level at 2-2.

The first came from the penalty spot, Konate’s trailing leg catching Gnonto on the byline. Referee Taylor opted against pointing to the spot but VAR intervened and recommended a check of the monitor. Taylor returned to change his mind and Calvert-Lewin thumped home a powerful spot kick despite Allison going the right way.

Elland Road explodes

Elland Road exploded but that was nothing compared to the reaction two minutes later as Aaronson teed up Anton Stach who cut into the area and beat several men before thumping a low finish past Allison with 75 minutes on the clock.

Leeds quickly pressed for a third and Calvert-Lewin fired just wide but a brilliant pass from Ryan Gravenberch led to Liverpool restoring their lead five minutes later, his pass dissecting the Whites back line and playing in Szoboszlai who rattled a clinical finish past Perri.

Perri had pulled off a stunning save moments earlier to keep out a Virgil header that was heading for the top left corner to the disbelief of the Reds bench.

Leeds attempted to hit straight back but Tanaka’s strike from range was well held by Allison.

A roar went up as nine minutes of added time were announced which Liverpool initially looked like surviving.

Leeds, though, had other ideas and the presence of Calvert-Lewin caused mayhem at a 95th-minute corner which flew through the box towards the back post to Tanaka who smashed home a no nonsense finish to send the home crowd bananas.

Even then both teams pushed for a winner, late Reds substitute Alexander Isak flashing a header just wide but Leeds finishing the game attacking in another night to remember under the Elland Road lights.

The point was enough to push Leeds a place higher in the Premier League table, above Nottingham Forest on goal difference into 16th place.

The Whites are three points clear of third-bottom West Ham United who play their game in hand at Brighton on Sunday afternoon.
