Serie A side reportedly 'closing in' on €16m Leeds United man amid James Trafford latest

A Serie A side are reportedly ‘closing on’ in a Leeds United player as the Whites push on with their pursuit of James Trafford.

A Serie A side are reportedly closing in on Leeds United goalkeeper Lucas Perri ahead of the Whites taking the next step in pursuit of James Trafford.

Leeds are on the hunt for a new goalkeeper and news of progress in their quest to sign their number one target in the position Trafford emerged on Thursday afternoon.

The YEP had reported in recent weeks that Leeds had been hopeful of getting a deal done for Manchester City goalkeeper Trafford if an exit from the Etihad could be negotiated this summer.

The 23-year-old's future was always going to be decided after the World Cup and David Ornstein reported on Thursday that Trafford appeared to be leaning towards a move to Elland Road with Newcastle United no longer considering the keeper an option despite previously holding long-term interest.

Leeds have already lost two goalkeepers this summer with out of contract pair Karl Darlow and Illan Meslier both departing, Meslier then joining Arsenal in a surprise move before Darlow signed for Manchester United.

The exits left Perri and the experienced Alex Cairns as United’s only first team keepers but Torino are now reportedly closing in on a deal to sign Perri amid increased Leeds confidence in getting Trafford. Leeds signed Perri last summer for 16 million euros from Lyon.

Journalist Gianluca Di Marzio reported the news on Friday afternoon, writing: “Torino is closing in on Lucas Perri , Leeds' Brazilian goalkeeper. The issue was a replacement the English club hadn't yet identified, which was making the 1997-born player's exit difficult. In the last few hours, Leeds' confidence in completing the deal for Manchester City's Trafford has increased , which has also brought Perri's arrival to Torino even closer.”

Transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano then reported: “Torino are closing in on Lucas Perri deal with Leeds United as new goalkeeper. Final details being sorted then #LUFC will proceed for James Trafford as new GK with player keen on the move.”

The YEP understands that Leeds remain in productive talks with City for Trafford but with numbers not yet agreed.

The YEP is of the understanding that Torino are indeed very keen on Perri but that he would not be allowed to move without at least one other keeper being signed.

As of Friday evening, the YEP understands that nothing is close either on the incoming or outgoing keeper front.
