Man City boss Pep Guardiola reacts to Elland Road boos during Ramadan break in Leeds United game
Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has given his reaction to Elland Road boos during the Ramadan break in their Leeds United victory.
Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has called the Elland Road boos for a Ramadan fasting break unfortunate, after his side's win over Leeds United.
The YEP reported on Friday that there could be a pause during the game once the sun set, to allow fasting Muslim players to take on food and water.
Two Manchester City players were observing the Holy month and so referee Peter Bankes stopped the game and both sets of players came to the touchline, amid boos from Elland Road.
After the game, which City won 1-0 thanks to Antoine Semenyo's first half goal, Guardiola was asked about the reaction.
"It's a modern world right?" he said. "You see what happened in the world again today right now, right? Respect the religion, the diversity, that's the point. We didn't [decide] it, the Premier League said it, one or two minutes, so the players do it. Unfortunate.
"Of course [the players] know [there were boos], but we did it, they take a little bit of vitamins and that's all. No more than that. Can they do it, take one break for one minute because the Premier League accepts, what is the problem? Is it a problem? No."
As for his team's performance, Guardiola said they expected Leeds and Elland Road to be 'so intense' but City did not get off to a good start.
“The idea was a thousand million passes”
The Whites missed golden chances through Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Brenden Aaronson and though Karl Darlow made a number of big stops, the home sided ended the match on top and came close to a leveller with a Jaka Bijol header.
"My idea of the game, we didn't really start really well," said Guardiola. "We expect Elland Road and Leeds to be so intense. The idea was a thousand million passes.
“We let them run and run, through our passes, but we needed a bit more intention up front to make our movements. We started to pass the ball to try to score a goal and we found it.
"We were incredibly focused in all departments, we didn't concede anything until last 15 when they put balls there and Calvert-Lewin and Nmecha were there.
“I was a bit more uncomfortable but we defended really well, a huge win for us."
