Ian Wright's hilarious Lisandro Martinez vs Dominic Calvert-Lewin verdict ahead of Leeds United vs Man Utd
It’s set to be a key battle between Leeds United and Manchester United on Sunday.
Ian Wright has joked that Leeds United striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin will have Lisandro Martinez ‘on his back in a rucksack’ this weekend.
Leeds welcome Manchester United to Elland Road for a huge Premier League clash on Sunday. The Whites will be looking to record a second consecutive win over their old rivals having won 2-1 at Old Trafford back in April, their first top-flight win at the stadium since 1981.
United’s unbeaten start to the league was ended by Arsenal last weekend but confidence is still high, while Manchester United are in crisis. They conceded a 92nd-minute equaliser to 10-man Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday before losing 2-0 against Atletico Madrid in the Champions League on Tuesday.

Ahead of Sunday’s Elland Road meeting, pundits on Stick To Football gave their predictions with former Manchester United midfielder Roy Keane expecting a 1-1 draw. He said: “This is where you get caught out with predictions. You say ‘they’re bound to beat them’, and there’s a twist. Leeds will score from a set-piece.”
Centre-back Martinez has dominated pre-match debate, having dropped a bombshell interview following Tuesday’s defeat in Madrid. The Argentinian said he ‘expected more’ from those above manager Michael Carrick and singled out technical director Jason Wilcox.
Martinez was physically bullied for Tottenham’s late equaliser last weekend, scored by Dominic Solanke, and Wright was asked whether he expects the outspoken defender to start on Sunday. And he made a great prediction regarding the battle with Calvert-Lewin.
“This is the perfect game for Leeds to play at home,” the former Arsenal striker said. “They can’t play him [Martinez] against Dominic Calvert-Lewin. He’ll have him on his back in a rucksack! Did you see what Solanke did to him?”
Martinez has reportedly been fined for his outburst and posted a public apology on Thursday. With Manchester United already short in defensive positions, dropping the Argentinian would be a bold move and he’s more likely to start.
Despite Manchester United’s poor form and Leeds looking strong, another former Old Trafford regular Gary Neville actually predicted an away victory. He added: “I am going 2-1 Man United. I think, to be honest with you, looking at it, if you got Cunha, Mbeumo, Amad, Rashford.”
